George Washington Wilson Collection. 1846-1951.

The collection comprises works published by G.W. Wilson, and/or his sons, Charles A. Wilson and John Wilson. The bulk of the images were also photographed by Wilson, with a significant number of the prints attributed to Charles A. Wilson. Some lantern slides were probably published after G.W. Wilson's death, under company names Wilson Brothers or G.W. Wilson & Co.; the overwhelming majority simply bear as publishing statement: "G.W.W." One group of lantern slides are reproductions of images acquired from Thompson & Co. of Liverpool; other photographers whose work is represented in the lantern slide format include: Eadweard Muybridge, Lyddell Sawyer, and Frank M. Sutcliffe. A view of the fire following the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, attributed to A.L. Murat, is also a part of one of the lantern slide groups. Depictions include: Travel scenes of Australia, Africa, India, Italy, Netherlands, Scotland, and Switzerland; views of English architecture and interiors, including Balmoral; art reproductions; cloud and water studies; snow scenes; boats or sailing ships; informal group portraits of British, Russian, or German Royal family members; and individual portraits of people of various nationalities.
